Perfectly Abnormal: Seven Gay Plays

Today I received in the mail my copy of Perfectly Abnormal: Seven Gay Plays, edited by Sky Gilbert. It’s an anthology of theatre work which includes Sir Richard Wadd, Pornographer. Sky has written a very thorough and thoughtful introductory essay which argues that there’s still a great deal of relevance left in those old war-horse labels of “gay” and “straight”, even if “the kids” aren’t explicitly using them anymore to self-describe.

But the 7 plays in this anthology are very unashamed of the “gay” label. In fact, says Sky, it’s this very conscious self-identification that serves to make them so powerfully relevant, especially in the midst of a pomosexual (“post modern sexuality”) world where the bold and boisterous claims at relativism are often just a smokescreen to mask the failure to commit to much of anything.

So, as happy as I am to see my play in print (under someone else’s banner, not my own self-published one), I’m even more excited about reading the other plays in the collection. I certainly hope the book finds success, and I look forward to seeing if it garners any critical feedback…
