Now Lounge Reading / SummerWorks

Happily, last night’s reading from SRW, Pornographer went very well. There were a whole bunch of semi-stunned faces in the audience, some of whom were obviously delighted, others who weren’t quite sure what to make of Sir Richard’s iambic porntameter. But who cares? I had a great time, reconnected with friends old and new, and then went for a rather decadent dessert with a couple of chums. Not a bad night at all.

Earlier in the day I posted my application to SummerWorks 07, for the world premiere of SRW, Topographer. Seems the Fringe lottery was not in the cards for me this year (again!), but, upon some reflection I’ve come to the conclusion that this is not necessarily a bad thing. The more I think about it, the more I realize that the Fringe is not quite the right fit for Sir Richard, whose text demands to be taken a bit more seriously than the haphazard methods of a lottery. So SRW, Topographer is now (or will soon be) in the hands of jury — perhaps hostile, perhaps friendly — and will be judged according to the merits of the writing. I’m optimistic, mostly because it’s healthier than perpetual pessimism.

This afternoon I had a cawfee with Jason Fraser, the talented actor/entrepreneur who played “John” in the original production of SRW, Pornographer. We had a lovely chat both broad and deep, and I found it quite re-invigorating.

So all in all, a very good 24 hours for Sir Richard, which hopefully heralds the beginning of some fresh momentum in the direction of getting SRW, Topographer mounted sometime in 2007. We shall see…
